Weiss records 1,000th kill in loss to Royals

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Madison Weiss added her name to the College of Saint Benedict volleyball history books Wednesday night as Bethel handed CSB its first loss of the season.

Weiss entered Wednesday's MIAC match with 995 career kills, and after recording a trio of kills in the first set, reached the milestone with her fifth kill of the match in the second set in Arden Hills. She finished the 3-0 loss with eight kills to put her at 1,003 in her career.

Weiss is one of 15 players in program history to reach the 1,000-kill milestone – and one of just two to record more than 1,000 kills and 500 digs. She joins All-American Tina Kampa on that exclusive list with 526 blocks to go along with her more than 1,000 kills. Weiss joins twin sister Hunter Weiss – who has more than 1,200 kills to her name – on CSB's 1,000-kill list.

Weiss' milestone was a highlight for the Bennies, who couldn't find their rhythm after a close loss in the first set. The team hit .133 as it fell 27-25, 25-16 and 25-15.

Neither team led by more than four points the entire first set. The Royals (3-1) led 12-8 before a kill from Hunter and a block from Madison made it 12-10, then a Bethel service error, a block from Gabby Heying and Paige Andries and a kill from Andries tied the set at 13-13.

From there it was back and forth the rest of the set. The Royals had the chance to close out the set at 25-24, but an attack error tied the set at 25-25. A pair of kills ended the set in Bethel's favor, and seemed to swing all the momentum the Royals' way.

Bethel jumped to a 4-1 lead early in set two. Kills from Emma Guest and Hunter and a block from Heying and Madison got CSB within two, 11-9, and a kill from Hunter got the Bennies back within two a short time later at 13-11, but the Royals went on a 6-1 run to take a 19-12 lead. Guest had a trio of late kills, but it wasn't enough to hold off Bethel.

The third and final set was close to start, and a block from Katie Koch and a Bethel attack error made it a one-point game with the Royals up 8-7, but Bethel went on a 7-0 run to go up 15-7, and CSB was never able to recover. A pair of kills from Heying made it 21-12, and Guest and Koch both had late kills, but the Royals' lead was too big to overcome.

Hunter Weiss finished with nine kills to pace the Bennies, who finished with 35 total kills, and Guest and Madison Weiss both had eight. Koch had 29 assists and Guest led the defense with 14 digs. Mackenzie McDonald and Koch both added 12 digs and Bridget McDonald finished with 10.

Emily Rossing and Kirstin Cotter both had 11 kills to pace the Royals, who hit .301 and had 51 kills. Ellie Hoyt and Hannah Wilhite combined for 44 assists and Rylee Forshee paced the defense with 18 digs.

CSB is on the road again Monday, April 19, when it heads to Winona to take on Saint Mary's at 7 p.m.
