Late runs help CSB to sweep of Saint Mary’s

WINONA, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team used late rallies in all three sets to hold off a persistent Saint Mary's team in a 3-0 victory Monday night in Winona.

The Cardinals' looked to push their winning streak to five matches, and kept things close throughout, but the Bennies (4-1) came away with the win by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-20.

In the first set, the Cardinals took a 9-8 lead after a back-and-forth start to the set, but a kill from Madison Weiss sparked a 5-0 run to take a 13-9 lead. The Cardinals responded with a short lead to tie the set at 16-16, and later SMU took a 21-20 lead, but after a Bennie timeout, CSB rattled off the final five points to seal the win. Hunter Weiss and Olivia Thompson each had kills and Thompson and Ava Miller had a block as part of the run.

The second set was back and forth again, and another kill from Thompson kicked off a 5-1 run that included kills from Hunter and Madison and a kill from Miller to give CSB a 12-9 lead. The two teams traded runs, and Saint Mary's took a 22-21 lead late, but Hunter Weiss had a pair of kills and SMU had two attack errors to end the set in CSB's favor.

Saint Mary's took a 12-10 lead in the third set, but kills from Thompson, Hunter and Madison and a service ace from Mackenzie McDonald got the Bennies back in the lead, 13-12. Another short run put CSB up 17-14, and a pair of kills from Hunter made it 24-18 before a SMU attack error ended the set and the match.

Hunter finished with 14 kills to pace the Bennies, who hit .230. Madison added 13 kills and Thompson finished with a career-high 11 kills. Katie Koch finished with 37 assists, Miller had three total blocks and Emma Guest paced the defense with 15 digs. McDonald added 13 digs.

Linnaea Wallis led all hitters with 18 kills for Saint Mary's. DeJaye Baab had 21 digs and Mandy Schmidt finished with 35 assists.

Saint Benedict returns to action Wednesday, April 21, when it heads to St. Peter to take on Gustavus. Both of the Bennies' remaining matches are against the Gusties.
