ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – As has been the case all season, the College of Saint Benedict softball team's bats came in clutch when the Bennies needed them Friday afternoon.
A pair of late RBI singles gave CSB the 4-3 win in the first game against UW-Stevens Point, and a bases-clearing double lift the Bennies to a 7-3 win to wrap up the sweep at the OAC in St. Joseph.
In the first game of the day, the Pointers (11-6) took a 3-0 lead after an RBI single in the first inning and two runs scored in the third on a Bennie error. CSB (8-2) got two runs back in the bottom of the third when
Gabby Spencer reached on an error and
Mo Burns advanced and then came around to score on a second UWSP error. A short time later,
Jordyn Swoboda stole second and Spencer – who had advanced to third stole home on the throw to second to make it 3-2.
Saint Benedict tied the game in the fifth when
Hannah Sundem hit an RBI single, and the Bennies took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth when Burns walked, stole second and came around to score on an RBI single by Swoboda.
The Bennies finished with six hits to the Pointers' three.
Lexi Hanson finished 2-for-3, including a double. Saint Benedict finished the game with five stolen bases.
Elly Novak picked up her fourth win of the season after giving up just a single earned run on three hits with six strikeouts.
Saint Benedict scored one run in each of the first two innings to take an early lead in Game 2.
Katie Carlson had an RBI double in the first and Burns reached on an error and Caitlyn Heinen came around to score on the error in the second. Stevens Point scored twice in the second thanks to a Bennie error to tie the game at 2-2, but an RBI fielder's choice and heads-up base running from Swoboda gave CSB a 3-2 lead in the third.
The Pointers tied the game once more in the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice, but
Megan Rasmussen reached on an error and sent in a run in the seventh inning and
Bryn Carlstrom followed that up a short time later with a bases-clearing double to wrap up scoring for the game.
Both teams finished with six hits in the second game, and Carlson, Carlstrom and Heinen all doubled to lead the Bennies. Senior pitcher
Ally Hjort gave up a single earned run and struck out three in seven innings of work to earn her third win of the season.
Friday's games wrapped up nonconference play for CSB, which is off now until Saturday, April 3, when the team opens MIAC play against Concordia with a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Moorhead.
