Novak, offensive production lead CSB softball in sweep of Concordia in MIAC opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. – It was another display of strong pitching and high scoring that led the College of Saint Benedict softball team to a conference season-opening sweep of Concordia on Saturday afternoon.

While the Bennies had only one hit in a game one pitchers' duel, game two was a breakthrough of offensive firepower with 13 hits and 13 runs in five innings of play.

Game one saw the Bennies take a 2-0 win, with Elly Novak leading the way in the circle. Novak struck out 12 in the one-hit shutout and lifted her season record to 5-0.

CSB broke through offensively in the sixth inning, with Gabby Spencer stealing third base and scoring the decisive run on a Concordia error on the same play. Two batters later, Jordyn Swoboda added the insurance run on a solo home run.

In game two, the Bennie offense was present right from the start, as CSB put up six runs in the first inning. With 13 total hits, CSB secured the five-inning, 13-3 victory.

After the Cobbers put two on the board in the first inning, Ally Hjort allowed only one more run in the shortened contest. Hjort struck out six in five innings of work and picked up her fourth win of the season.

Tori Harren led the offense in game two, going 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and 3 total RBI. Spencer and Megan Rasmussen also had multi-hit efforts, while Swoboda chipped in a double and 2 RBI.

CSB softball is back in action Wednesday, April 7, hosting Saint Mary's University in a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader at the Outdoor Athletic Complex.
