ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict swim and dive team hadn't competed in almost a year heading into Saturday's dual against St. Thomas, but the Bennies were in mid-season form at the team's season-opening dual. The swimmers competed Saturday morning in St. Paul, and the divers hosted the Tommies at SJU Saturday afternoon.

CSB recorded 14 top-three finishes and several career-best times or marks in a loss to a tough Tommie squad. UST won the dual 217-80.

Junior Ana Birklid and sophomore transfer Fiona Rosko both recorded a pair of runner-up finishes, and Jessica Milstroh and Molly Johanson each added a pair of top-three finishes to lead the team individually. Milstroh and Birklid were also a part of two top-three relay teams.

In her first meet as a Bennie, Rosko – who transferred from Millikin University prior to the 2020-21 school year – took second in both the 200 fly and the 200 breaststroke. She finished in 2:20.21 in the 200 fly and 2:33.38 in the 200 breaststroke. Both times are just outside the top 10 in program history. Birklid took second in the 200 free in 2:02.86 and in the 200 IM in 2:17.88.

Milstroh took second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.00, and also recorded a third-place finish in the 100 fly, finishing in 1:04.04. Johanson took third in both the 1,000 freestyle (11:52.37 – a four-second personal best) and the 200 breaststroke (2:33.58).

Senior Claudia Mahoney finished third behind Birklid in the 200 free in 2:06.62, and first year Hannah Tatge started her collegiate swimming career with a third-place finish in the 500 free. She finished in 6:04.96. Sophomore Thea Oman finished third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.50. After her record-setting first season with the team, sophomore diver Emily Quill took third in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 377. Quill was the only CSB diver to compete Saturday afternoon.

Milstroh, Madison Slavik, Emi Wagner and Birklid teamed up to finish second in the 200 free relay in 1:43.74, and Lindsay Smutka, Johanson, Milstroh and Birklid took third in the 200 medley relay in 1:55.18.

The CSB swimmers are scheduled to take on Hamline Friday, Feb. 12 in St. Paul, while the divers compete Saturday, Feb. 13, at SJU. All schedules are subject to change. Schedule changes throughout the season will be posted on www.gobennies.com, as well as the department's Twitter and Facebook pages.
