WINONA, Minn. – Heading into Wednesday's game in Winona,
Brynn Sexauer didn't have any goals in her collegiate hockey career.
Heading back to St. Joseph following the game, she has two.
Sexauer scored a pair of late goals to help the College of Saint Benedict hockey team skate to a 2-2, overtime tie with Saint Mary's Wednesday evening in Winona. The tie bumps CSB's record to 0-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the MIAC, and comes at a good time as the Bennies have two more games scheduled yet this week.
The first two periods were scoreless Wednesday night, and the Bennies' offense was held to just 11 shots on net in the two periods combined. The Cardinals (0-2-2) started the scoring, but Sexauer had an answer.
Saint Mary's got on the board first with a goal at the 3:25 mark of the third period. That one-goal lead held until midway through the final period when Sexauer scored the first goal of her CSB hockey career off assists from
Reegan Patnode and
Riley Schneider.
The Cardinals added a second goal with 1:13 left to play, but Sexauer had an answer again and scored 33 seconds later to tie the game 2-2 and send it to overtime.
Maria Wallace had the assist on Sexauer's second goal.
Each team had a handful of shots on net in overtime, but nothing found the back of the net so the tie stayed.
In her first outing in the net in her junior season, goalie
Maggie Gilchrist finished with 31 saves – including five in overtime to preserve the tie. She also had 12 saves in the second period. The Cardinals finished with 33 shots on net to CSB's 22.
Annika Brodt led the Bennies with four shots on net.
CSB is scheduled to be back in action Friday, Feb. 19, when it heads to St. Paul for a nonconference game against St. Thomas. The Bennies are also scheduled to be on the ice Sunday, Feb. 21, for a 2 p.m. MIAC game at Gustavus. All schedules are subject to change; updates will be posted on
