WINONA, Minn. – After a tough loss at Saint Mary's Friday night, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team made sure it didn't suffer the same fate Saturday afternoon.
The Bennies scored four goals for the second time this season – including three in the second period – and beat the Cardinals 4-1 to wrap up the season series in Winona. With the win, Saint Benedict improves to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC.
Saint Benedict waited until the third period to score for the first time Friday, but didn't make that mistake again Saturday. Sophomore
Brynn Sexauer scored her first goal of the season midway through the first period to get her team on the board. Seniors
Julia Pias and
Annika Brodt assisted on the goal.
That lead held for the rest of the first period and the first eight minutes of the second, and then the Bennie offense came to life. CSB scored three goals in eight minutes to take a 4-0 lead late in the second. Sophomore
Jamie Benzie started the scoring frenzy with her second goal of the season at the 8:10 mark off an assist from Pias.
First year
Aurora Opsahl made it 3-0 at the 11:25 mark off assists from
Jenna Timm and
Ava Stinnett, and Benie notched her second goal of the game at the 16:46 mark of the second to make it 4-0. Pias notched her third assist of the day on Benzie's second goal. The Cardinals (4-3, 3-1) scored their lone goal of the game on the power play at the 18:49 mark of the final period.
Junior goalie
Ally Frantzick picked up her first win of the season after stopping 20 of the 21 shots she faced. The Bennies outshot Saint Mary's 21-18, and Benzie and
Zoe Culshaw-Klein led the team with four shots each.
Saint Benedict is off now until Friday, Dec. 3, when it hosts a ranked Gustavus team at 7 p.m. at the MAC in St. Cloud.
