WINONA, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team suffered its first MIAC loss of the season Friday night when it fell 2-1 to Saint Mary's.
After giving up one goal in each of the first two periods, the Bennies (3-4, 2-1) scored a third-period goal and put up a flurry of shots, but dropped the first of the two-game series in Winona.
Saint Mary's (4-2, 3-0) got on the board in the eighth minute of the first period when the Cardinals scored on the power play. Both teams struggled to get their offense going in the first, and combined for eight shots on net.
The Bennies outshot Saint Mary's 9-6 in the second, but the Cardinals scored what proved to be the game-winner in the third minute of the period to make it 2-0.
Sami Boerboom and
Jamie Benzie had back-to-back shots on net, and CSB got a few shots on net on a power play, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Sophomore
Corrine Brown got the Bennies on the board at the 12:57 mark of the third period when she scored her first goal of the season off assists from
Ava Stinnett and
Addy Hackley. CSB pulled goalie
Maggie Gilchrist for the final minute of play, but the Cardinal defense held the Bennies to a single shot that went wide in that final minute.
Gilchrist had a big third period to keep CSB in the game as she stopped all 15 shots she faced. She finished with 25 saves. SMU outshot CSB 27-23, and senior
Julia Pias led the CSB offense with three shots on net.
Saint Benedict and Saint Mary's play again at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, in Winona.
