ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team picked up its first MIAC win of 2021 Friday night when it swept Macalester. The team hit a season-best .243 as it beat the Scots 25-21, 25-17 and 25-16 in St. Paul.
Macalester (10-7, 1-3) took an early 8-4 lead in the first set, but five errors from the Scots tied the match at 9-9. A kill from
McKenzie Galvin and a
Gabby Heying service ace helped the Bennies build a 15-12 lead, and after Macalester tied the set at 17-17, kills from
Grace Holm and Galvin helped extend CSB's lead, and a kill from Heying ended the set.
The Bennies (3-10, 1-3) used an 8-1 run in the second set to build a 17-9 lead. The Scots responded with a run of their own and got within 18-15, but
Audrey Spolidoro, Heying and Holm all had kills and a
Mackenzie McDonald service aces made it 22-15, and the Bennies never looked back from there.
After a back-and-forth start to the third set, CSB went on a 6-1 run that included two more service aces from Heying to go up 17-11, and a pair of kills from Heying ended the set and the match.
Heying led the Bennies with 15 kills, Galvin finished with nine and
Emma Guest added eight. Spolidoro recorded a career-high 37 assists and
Mary Wenisch led the defense with 18 digs.
CSB held the Scots to a .120 hitting percentage. Eliza King led Macalester with 11 kills, Nicole Norton had 25 assists and she also had a team-high eight digs.
The Bennies are back on the road Saturday, Oct. 9, when they head to Minneapolis for a 7 p.m. match against Augsburg.
