Two second-half goals lift CSB to fifth straight win

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team moved one game closer to a top-two MIAC finish Wednesday afternoon on a cold, wet day in Duluth.

The Bennies scored twice within three minutes early in the second half, and those two goals proved to be enough to lift the Bennies to a 2-1 win over St. Scholastica in the team's final road game of the regular season.

With a single game left in the 2021 regular season, Saint Benedict is 9-3-3 overall and 7-1-2 and in second in the MIAC behind only St. Kate's, which is 8-1-1 overall. The Bennies hope to hold onto that second seed – or move up with a Wildcat loss – Saturday in the last day of regular-season play.

The weather was cold, but CSB's offense – and defense – were hot Wednesday. Ella Young and Roxy Veldman both had early shots on net, and CSB had a trio of shots on net midway through the half. The Bennies put eight total shots on net in the first half – and didn't give up a single shot on net – but the Saints' goalie stopped all eight shots, and the game was scoreless heading into halftime.

The second half wasn't scoreless long. Abby Willenbring and Ellie Wohnoutka both put shots on net within 40 seconds of each other in the 51st minute, and Young scored at the 53:21 mark – an unassisted goal to put the Bennies up 1-0. First year Alli Voss made it 2-0 and scored the eventual game-winner less than three minutes later at 56:19 when she took an assist from Grace Navara and found the back of the net to make it 2-0.

The Saints got within a single goal in the 62nd minute when they scored on their only shot on net all game, but Saint Benedict's defense cracked down and didn't give up another shot on net. St. Scholastica had a shot that hit the top pipe, and a shot that went high, but couldn't score the equalizer, and the Bennies held on to win their fifth straight and push their unbeaten streak to 10 games.

CSB outshot the Saints 17-10, including 12-1 in shots on goal. Veldman, Noack, Young and Willenbring all put two shots on net to pace CSB. Annie Waters and Paige Kahlmeyer split time in goal and faced just one shot combined.

Saint Benedict returns home to wrap up regular-season play Saturday, Oct. 30, when it hosts Carleton at 3:30 p.m. There will be a costume contest for fans, and the best contests have the opportunity to win prizes during the game.
