CSB volleyball looks makes playoff push in weekend home games

ST. JOSEPH, Minn – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team is getting ready to host a MIAC double header this weekend. The Bennies first host Saint Marys University at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, and then Carleton College at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16.

About the Competition
Saint Marys is 7-14 overall and 3-2 in the MIAC with wins against Carleton, St. Kate's and St. Scholastica. The Cardinals head into Friday looking for a win after two straight losses. Ciarra McNally leads the team with 247 kills and Mandy Schmidt is also a strong offensive player with 430 assists. On defense DeJaye Baab leads with 302 digs and Braidyn Rutten with 62 blocks.
 
Carleton College is 0-5 in the MIAC and 5-14 overall on the season. They play Concordia College on Friday before coming to CSB. With a rough start to the season, they are looking to find a rhythm within the conference. There top offensive players are Annelise Sokolow with 179 kills and Inger Shelton with 579 assists.
 
Last Meeting
The last time CSB played Saint Marys was April 19, 2021, in Winona, CSB won 3-0. Emma Guest and Mackenzie McDonald both had a strong defensive game with 15 digs for Guest and 13 for McDonald. CSB hasn't played Carleton since October 25, 2019. CSB hosted the Knights and won the game in three sets. Gabby Heying had eight kills and six aces.
 
The Storyline
The young CSB team is looking to turn things around after coming off a MIAC loss at Augsburg last weekend. They are overall 1-4 in the conference after a 3-0 win against Macalester. They are hoping to gain momentum going into two more weekend road trips left to end the season. Friday's game has big MIAC Tournament implications as both the Cardinals and Bennies are looking to secure one of the final spots in the six-team tournament, so both teams will be looking for the win.
 
Who to Watch
Heying has a been a strong offensive player for the Bennies with 199 kills, Audrey Spolidoro and Payton Marker are there helping her with 267 assists for Spolidoro and 237 for Marker. In the last game against Augsburg Emma Guest was a strong defensive player with 17 digs and Mary Wenisch with 16 digs. Wenisch leads the team with 246 total digs.
