ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team headed into Wednesday's MIAC game looking to avenge one of its conference losses from earlier in the season, but a cold second half dashed those hopes.
CSB scored 17 points in the second half and fell 60-47 to St. Kate's Wednesday evening in St. Paul. The loss drops the team's record to 11-13 overall and 7-12 in the MIAC, and ends the team's hopes for a MIAC playoff bid.
The Wildcats (12-12, 9-10) jumped to a seven-point lead midway through the first half, but
Sidney Schiffler and
Maddie Schmitz scored, then Schmitz and
Megan Thompson both hit layups to get within one 15-14. Another layup by Schmitz got the Bennies within one again late in the quarter, but the Wildcats led 19-16 after the first.
Schmitz converted a three-point play to start the second quarter and tie the game at 19-19, and a jumper from Schmitz and a pair of threes from Thompson put CSB up seven, 27-20, with 6:51 left in the half. The Wildcats responded with an 8-0 run to take a slim lead, and a three from
Tori Szathmary gave CSB its last lead of the game, 30-28, with 2:53 left in the half. St. Kate's led 34-30 at halftime thanks to a last-second layup.
Alex Johnson and
Hannah Johnson both scored to start the second half, but another jumper by
Alex Johnson at the 5:50 mark to get her team within three marked the final field goal the Bennies made in the quarter. She hit a pair of free throws to get back within three, 41-38, with 2:48 left, and neither team scored again until the Wildcats hit a jumper with two seconds left in the quarter to take a 43-38 lead into the final quarter.
CSB went 7-for-8 from the line in the fourth quarter, but hit a single field goal as the Wildcats outscored the Bennies 17-9.
Schmitz and Thompson both finished with 14 points to lead CSB, which shot 32.7 percent from the field.
Alex Johnson added 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. The Bennies went 10-for-11 from the lien and had 27 rebounds and 15 turnovers.
Jackie Radford led the Wildcats with 13 points and Bree Flynn had 10 rebounds. St. Kate's shot 42.1 percent from the field, went 7-for-10 from the line and had 36 rebounds and 17 turnovers.
CSB wraps up the season Saturday, Feb. 22, when it heads back to St. Paul to take on Bethel, which clinched the league's regular-season title Wednesday night.
