Schmitz leads four in double digits in big win over Scots

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team has struggled to score at times throughout the 2019-20 season, but Wednesday night was not one of those games.

CSB shot nearly 55 percent from the field and hit the 80-point mark for the third time this season in an 83-58 win over Macalester Wednesday in Claire Lynch. This marks the first time since Dec. 4 the team has scored more than 80 points.

After jumping to an early 8-2 lead, Macalester (1-21, 0-17) came back and took a 17-11 lead with just over two minutes left in the first quarter. Kendyl Thompson scored and Megan Thompson hit a three to get the Bennies within one, 17-16, at the end of the first, and Megan scored then Maddie Schmitz hit a three to keep the 12-0 run going and put the Bennies back up 23-17. Schmitz scored 12 straight points for CSB in a two-minute span to put her team up 30-19 with just under six minutes left in the half.

The Scots got within nine, but Sidney Schiffler hit a three and Hannah Johnson and Tori Szathmary both scored to make it a 12-point game, 39-27, at halftime.

Macalester stayed within 10 points of CSB to start the second half, but Schmitz scored, Schiffler hit a three and Alex Johnson scored to push CSB's lead to 17, 52-35, with four minutes left in the third. Alex scored again and Haylee Fingalsen hit a three to give CSB its first 20-point lead of the game, 59-37, with 1:11 left in the third, and from there the Bennies held strong for the win.
