ST. JOSEPH, Minn. –
Sidney Schiffler did some damage from long range Wednesday night, but a late three to get her team within five wasn't quite enough to complete a late comeback.
Schiffler hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game with 1:07 remaining to make it a five-point game, but the College of Saint Benedict basketball team fell 67-58 to St. Kate's Wednesday in Claire Lynch. The loss marks the fifth straight for CSB, which is now 6-5 overall and 2-4 in the MIAC.
CSB was down seven to start the final quarter, but Schiffler hit a three to make it a four-point game, 48-44. The Wildcats (5-7, 2-5) pushed their lead back to 10 before
Alex Johnson scored on a layup and then hit a free throw to make it a seven-point game. St. Kate's lead ballooned back out to 10 before
Maddie Schmitz hit a three with 1:26 left, and 19 seconds later Schiffler scored to get her team within 60-55.
The Wildcats, however, scored on a three-point play to regain an eight-point lead, and after
Megan Thompson converted a three-point play to make it a five-point game again, the Wildcats went 4-for-4 from the line to end the game and seal the win.
Saint Benedict jumped to a 10-4 lead to start the game thanks in part to a pair of threes from Schiffler. The Wildcats, however, closed the gap, and snagged a five-point lead late in the quarter, but
Tori Szathmary hit a free throw and later grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a layup in the final two seconds to get CSB within two, 16-14.
The Wildcats pushed their lead back out to eight over the course of the second quarter, but
Shae Olsen hit a three and Thompson converted a three-point play to get her team back within two at halftime, 34-32. Olsen hit another three early in the third to make it a two-point game after St. Kate's converted a three-point play, but the Wildcats held CSB to just nine third-quarter points and took a 48-41 lead into the final 10 minutes. Schiffler hit a three early in the fourth to make it a four-point game, but the Wildcats led by 10 with 5:25 to go before CSB made its late comeback.
Schiffler went 4-for-6 from long range and led CSB with 18 points. She also had seven rebounds for CSB, which shot 37.7 percent from the field and hit seven 3-pointers. Olsen added 10 points and Schmitz had eight rebounds. The Bennies went 5-for-9 from the line and had 39 rebounds and 16 turnovers.
Danica Cambrice paced St. Kate's with 15 points and Jackie Radford had 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Wildcats shot nearly 44 percent from the field, went 13-for-22 from the line and had 39 rebounds and 10 turnovers.
CSB is on the road now for a pair of games as it heads to St. Paul Saturday to take on No. 22 St. Thomas at 3 p.m., then heads to Winona Wednesday, Jan. 15, for a 7 p.m. game against Saint Mary's.
