CSB volleyball looks to keep win streak alive at Simpson tourney

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After another five-set MIAC win Wednesday night, the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team looks to keep its winning streak alive and continue its solid tournament play as it heads to Indianola, Iowa, for the Simpson Invitational.
 
CSB (13-1) takes on UW-River Falls at 5 p.m. Friday to start its tournament run. Saturday, the team plays host-school Simpson at 11 a.m. and Principia at 1 p.m. before returning to St. Joseph.
 
About the Falcons
River Falls is 11-7 overall heading into the weekend tournament, and are 2-4 in their last six games. River Falls is coming off a five-set WIAC loss to UW-Eau Claire Wednesday night. Mallory Griffin and Katie Koerper both have at least 170 kills to lead the Falcons, and Hailey Huseth runs the offense and has 601 assists. Hannah Robb leads the defense with 337 digs.
 
About the Storm
Simpson is 6-7 overall and looking to snap a two-game losing streak as it heads into its home tournament. Hannah Lester and Taylor Sudmann both have at least 100 kills, Alyssa Mathews has 505 assists to her name and Ariana Martinez has a team-high 227 digs. Lester also has a team-high 47 total blocks.
 
About Principia
Principia – based out of Elsah, Ill. – is 4-6 overall and is 1-5 in its last six matches. Nikki Matters leads the team with 120 kills, Devon Marunde has 289 assists and Matters also leads the team with 172 digs.
 
The Storyline
After getting back from Iowa, CSB plays one of its biggest matches of the season Saturday, Oct. 5, when it hosts Augsburg, so the team is looking to continue to build on its momentum heading into that match. CSB's 13-1 start is its best since 2014 when the team went 14-1 to start the season. Saint Benedict has gone 4-0 in each of its last two tournament appearances this season.
 
Who to Watch
Junior Madison Weiss had a career night Wednesday to help lead her team to a five-set win at St. Kate's. She had a career-best 26 kills to go along with five solo blocks, another career high. She and twin sister Hunter Weiss are both in the top five in the MIAC in kills, kills per set and hitting percentage, and Madison leads the conference in total blocks.
