CSB tennis wraps up play at ITA Regionals

09/21/2019

ST. PETER, Minn. – After a competitive first day of play at the ITA Midwest Regionals Friday in St. Peter, the College of Saint Benedict tennis team still had two individuals competing Saturday, as well as one doubles team.

After starting her first-ever ITA run 2-0, sophomore Lily Fredericks took on the top seed in the tournament and lost to finish the weekend 2-1. Junior Kayla McIver went 1-1 in consolation play, and Fredericks and senior Tessa Rahrick went 2-0 in doubles play to win the consolation bracket of their section of the draw.

"I am so proud of Lily, Tessa and Kayla," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "They had a great weekend of tennis, and represented the Bennies against the best players in the region. All three of them should have a ton of confidence leading into the final week of the fall."

After a 2-0 day Friday, Fredericks opened day two against Gustavus' Ginger Valentine – the tournament's top seed. She fell 6-2, 6-1 in what Engdahl described as a very good match. After going 1-1 Friday – including a three-hour marathon match that ended in a 14-12 super breaker to give McIver the win – McIver went 1-1 again Saturday in consolation play. She beat Coe's Eliza Sundermann 6-2, 6-2 before falling to UW-Whitewater's Madeline Slicker 6-3, 6-4.

After singles play was finished for CSB, Rahrick and Fredericks teamed up to go 2-0 and win their section of the draw. At the ITA Regionals, consolation doubles matches are broken into eight mini draws based on their section, and the duo won their section.

CSB wraps up the fall portion of its 2019-20 season Saturday, Sept. 28, when it hosts both Bemidji State and UW-Stout.
