CSB softball ends season at NCAA Regional

PELLA, Iowa – The College of Saint Benedict softball team wrapped up its 2019 season Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Regional Tournament in Pella, Iowa. After dropping a close game to UW-La Crosse in Friday's first round, CSB fell 6-1 to host-school Central in an elimination game Saturday.

Saint Benedict wraps up the season 27-16 overall after earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.

Both teams had base runners early in Saturday's elimination game, but neither team was able to score until the third inning when the Dutch (27-9) hit an RBI double to make it 1-0. Madison Mikolich singled and made it to second when Emilie Antony reached on an error, but both were stranded.

Central did all its damage in the bottom of the fourth when it scored five runs on three hits and a trio of Saint Benedict errors. Central had an RBI fielder's choice, scored another run on an error, an RBI single and a two-run single to take a 6-0 lead. CSB shut the Dutch down in the final two innings, and Olivia McCabe hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh, but Central held on for the win to advance to Saturday's second elimination game.

Six different players had a single hit for CSB. McCabe had a homer and Mo Burns hit a double to lead the team. First year Lauren York took the loss on the mound after giving up a single run in the first 2.1 innings. She gave up one hit and walked four batters. Ally Hjort threw the final 3.2 innings and gave up five runs – none of them earned – on four hits.

Saturday marked the final game for the team's four seniors: Emilie Antony, Kate Deming, Claire Boatman and Mikolich. The foursome helped the team win 111 games and earn a pair of NCAA Tournament berths – just the third and fourth in program history.
