ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict club ultimate Frisbee team couldn't have asked for a better weekend to wrap up its 2018-19 season.
After dealing with cold temps and windy days, the team got beautiful weather April 20-21 in Madison, Wis. – and it took advantage. CSB went 5-0 in pool play Saturday to advance to Sunday's championship round where it finished in fourth at the region tournament. The team wrapped up the season 21-11 overall.
On Saturday, CSB started the day with an 11-0 win over Carleton Nova. It followed that up with an 11-5 win over Drake, then beat St. Olaf 10-8 – the team's first win over the Oles in at least the last four seasons.
Beth Zobitz had a great snag over the shoulder of her defender that she then threw into the end zone for a point in the St. Olaf match. CSB wrapped up Saturday with a 10-4 win over Macalester and an 11-2 win over Grinnell.
Since Sunday was Easter, CSB was down a few players to start the day, and fell 13-7 to Michigan Tech – the newest member of the conference. CSB bounced back with a 13-5 win over Macalester, but lost 10-7 to Carleton Eclipse to finish in fourth. Eclipse earned one of the two conference bids to nationals thanks to that win.
Dayse Rojas had a big weekend, and skied players who were a foot taller than her.
Nicole Nye drove to Madison early Sunday morning to compete with the team since it was short handed due to Easter.
Hailey Sabin and
Gabi Miner played tough handler positions, and
Jaime Purdie and
Ally Wilson had great chemistry and created some big points Saturday.
This marked the final matches for the team's seniors:
Cassie Renckens,
Mariel Culloton, Purdie,
Hailey Shoemaker,
Johannah Frisby and
Lexie Erickson. Shoemaker, Frisby and Erickson served as the team's captains.
