CSB softball takes care of business at Concordia

MOORHEAD, Minn. – After an up-and-down start to the MIAC season, the College of Saint Benedict softball team has found its groove and has positioned itself to be in the mix for a spot in the postseason tournament.

After a sweep of Concordia Monday in Moorhead, CSB is in fifth in the conference standings with a single doubleheader left in the regular season. CSB – which beat the Cobbers 5-0 and 13-0 behind solid pitching performances from Ally Hjort and Grace Gilmore and a strong offense in Game 2 – is 13-7 in the MIAC and sits just behind third-place St. Olaf (13-5) and fourth-place Hamline (11-5). CSB ends the MIAC regular season Saturday with a doubleheader against the Oles.

Saint Benedict (25-11) had six total hits in the first game Monday, but combined with four Cobber errors, that was enough to get the job done. Claire Boatman had an RBI single in the first to give CSB all the runs it would need, but two more runs scored in the fourth on a wild pitch and an error, and a two-run single from Mo Burns wrapped up scoring in the top of the seventh.

Boatman went 3-for-4 and Burns had two RBIs for CSB. Hjort picked up her 15th win of the season and brought her sophomore season strikeout total to 99 after adding six in seven innings of work. She didn't give up a single run and allowed just five hits.

In the second game of the day, 12 different players had a hit for CSB in what turned out to be a wild last few innings. After a pitching duel through the first three innings, Saint Benedict got on the board in the fourth thanks to a Cobber error, an RBI double from Madison Mikolich and an RBI single from Emilie Antony.

Burns singled and came around to socre to make it 3-0 after five, and Olivia McCabe had a two-run single and Burns added an RBI single to her daily total to make it 6-0 after six innings.

CSB's bats got hot in the seventh, and the team batted around. In the top of the seventh alone, six different players had hits and seven runs scored on six hits and two errors. The highlight of the inning was a grand slam from McCabe – her third home run in the past four games. Boatman had an RBI single and Lauren York had a two-run single.

When all was said and done, CSB scored 13 runs on 16 hits and four Concordia errors. McCabe went 3-for-3 with six RBIs, and Kate Deming and Boatman each had a pair of hits. Gilmore picked up her fourth win of the season and struck out a career-high 10 batters. She gave up just two hits in six innings of work. Alex Smith struck out two in the final inning of play.

CSB is at home one last time this season Saturday, April 27, when it hosts St. Olaf in a key MIAC regular-season finale. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
