CSB tennis drops heartbreaker to St. Olaf

SARTELL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team looked poised to pick up its third MIAC win of the season Saturday evening, but the breaks just didn't go CSB's way.

For the second straight match, CSB had one doubles match that needed a tiebreaker, two singles matches that went to three sets and three more – including on that went three sets – that needed tiebreakers to decide as the team fell 5-4 to St. Olaf at Sta-Fit in Sartell.

"We put ourselves in a position to win again, so we have to be extremely proud of that," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "The MIAC is so deep this year; all of these matches are coming down to the last point. At the start of the season, we had a lot of breaks go our way. Now, the tables have turned in these tight matches. It will be gut-check time for us as we close out the season over the next few weeks."

Saint Benedict led 2-1 after doubles play thanks to big wins at No. 2 and 3. Tessa Rahrick and Mackenzie Schurhamer got down early, but fought back to win 8-7 and force a tiebreaker, which they won 7-5 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 doubles, Lauren Clark and Erin Kolbow won 8-4. Kayla McIver and Lily Fredericks fell 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.

McIver and Fredericks picked up CSB's two singles wins – and were the only two singles matches not to need a tiebreaker or a third set. McIver won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, and Fredericks picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.

Rahrick forced three sets and a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles, but ultimately fell 1-6, 6-7 (4-7), 9-11. Schurhamer and Kolbow both forced tiebreakers before falling at No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively. Schurhamer fell 7-6 (7-0), 6-2, and Kolbow lost 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). First year Karsen Aune lost her first set 6-2, came back to win the next set 6-4, but lost 13-11 in the third and final set.

CSB is now 9-4 overall and 2-4 and tied for seventh in the MIAC with four matches left in the regular season. Saint Benedict is on the road Sunday when it heads to St. Peter to take on Gustavus, which is undefeated in MIAC play at 3-0.
