CSB splits a pair of games in Florida

PLANT CITY, Fla. – The College of Saint Benedict split a pair of games on its third day of competition at the spring break tournament in Plant City, Fla. CSB lost 3-2 to Emerson – the team's first loss of the trip and second of the season – but bounced back to defeat WPI 5-1.

After dropping a close game to Emerson, CSB (6-2) came out swinging against WPI. With two outs, Emilie Antony tripled and came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. That lead held until the fourth inning when Alex Smith doubled, and Mo Burns came in to run and stole third before scoring on an RBI single by Sheridan Glashan – who had been called in to pinch hit.

WPI made it 2-1 in the fifth, but Saint Benedict made it 3-1 in the bottom of the inning when Kate Deming singled, stole second and came around to single on an RBI single by Antony. The team added a pair of runs in the sixth thanks to an RBI single from Deming and a sac fly from Smith to wrap up scoring.

Deming, Antony and Kendra Swanson all had two hits for CSB, which finished with 10 total hits. Ally Hjort picked up the win after throwing all seven innings. She gave up one run on five hits and struck out nine batters.

In the first game of the day, Deming tripled to start the game, but got thrown out, and she was the team's lone base runner until the fourth inning. Emerson scored all the runs it would need in the third inning thanks to three hits and a pair of CSB errors. CSB got on back in the fourth when Deming singled, stole second and came around to score on an error, and the team tried to put a rally together in the seventh, but came up short. Smith and Jordyn Swoboda singled, and Lauren Scheneman – pinch running for Smith – scored on a wild pitch, but the next three batters got out to end the threat, and the game.

Deming had a pair of hits for CSB, which had eight hits to Emerson's nine. Lauren York threw the first three innings and took the loss after giving up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Smith gave up four hits and struck out three in the final three innings.

CSB is back in action Thursday when it takes on Aurora and St. John Fischer. Fischer beat the team 6-5 in extra innings last season in Arizona.
