MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team picked up its second MIAC win of the season Saturday afternoon after coming out on top, 5-4, in a match with Hamline that was close from start to finish.
From a No. 1 doubles match that was decided by two points to a pair of singles matches that went three sets – including a tight match where
Erin Kolbow came from behind to pull out a win at No. 5 singles – CSB and Hamline were evenly matched throughout.
"I am so proud of the way we fought through some stuff today," head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "We had a day where it was hard to get any momentum, and we were down in a lot of matches. We were able to step up and pick up a win against a tough Hamline team when we were struggling at the start. Even though tennis-wise we had a tough day, we were able to create belief that we can win on any given day."
Engdahl mixed up the doubles lineup Saturday and found success as Saint Benedict started the match up 2-1 heading into singles.
Lily Fredericks and
Tessa Rahrick teamed up for a tight 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, and
Lauren Clark and
Erin Kolbow won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Anna Miller and
Mackenzie Schurhamer fell 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Fredericks and Schurhamer both picked up singles wins for CSB, but it was Koblow's tight match at No. 5 singles that ultimately gave her team the win. After losing her first set 6-0, Kolbow was down 5-2, but came back to win 7-5 and force a third set, which she won 10-7 to give CSB its fifth win on the day.
Fredericks stayed undefeated in singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles and Schurhamer won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Rahrick fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles,
Kayla McIver lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and
Karsen Aune battled before losing a three-set match at No. 6 singles. She lost the first set 6-1, won the next 7-5 and then lost the third and final set 11-9.
Saint Benedict is now 9-1 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC and is scheduled to play its first home outdoor match of the season next Saturday, April 5, when it takes on Bethel at 4 p.m. in St. Joseph.
