SARTELL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team picked up an 8-1 win over Northwestern to start its home season Saturday evening at Sta-Fit in Sartell. CSB won all three doubles matches, and won several close singles matches to pick up its second win of the season.
"This team is definitely heading in the right direction," head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "We didn't have the same start in doubles we had last match, but we did a great job focusing and getting to the level we needed to play. We are growing every day, and today's match was another step forward."
Lily Fredericks and
Kayla McIver picked up an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles for CSB, and
Tessa Rahrick and
Erin Kolbow won 8-3 at No. 2 and
Mackenzie Schurhamer and
Karsen Aune won by the same score at No. 3 doubles.
Rahrick won a tight match at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-4, and McIver and Fredericks had solid wins at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. McIver won 6-1, 6-1 and Fredericks won 6-3, 6-1. The Eagles (0-2) picked up their lone win of the day at No. 4 singles, but Kolbow pushed that match to the limit before falling 6-3, 2-6, 10-12.
Schurhamer picked up a close win at No. 5 singles, coming out ahead 4-6, 7-6, 12-10 after dropping the first set, and Aune won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
CSB is now 2-0 and is off now until Friday, Feb. 22, when it hosts Minnesota-Morris at 6 p.m. at Sta-Fit.
