Thompson’s late free throws lift CSB to overtime win

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Things happened fast for the College of Saint Benedict basketball team in the final seconds of overtime Wednesday evening against Concordia.

Megan Thomson made a free throw to put CSB up two, 90-88, with 35 seconds left. Concordia missed a three-point shot with 14 seconds, but got the offensive rebound and hit a three to go up one, 91-90, with seconds left.

CSB took a timeout to advance the ball, and looked to be setting up for a last-second shot, but the Cobbers tied up the ball and received possession with three seconds left. Concordia's inbounds pass was intercepted, however, and Thompson stole the ball and was fouled going up for a layup with 0.4 seconds left. She hit both free throws to lift Saint Benedict to the 92-91 win in Moorhead.

Ninety-two points is the most the CSB basketball team has scored since beating Crown 97-37 on Nov. 28, 2011.

Saint Benedict (13-9, 9-6) led by as many as three early in the overtime thanks to a 3-pointer from McKenzie Holgate, but that was the biggest lead for either team. The lead was tied five times in overtime, including at 91-91 with 0.4 seconds left after Thompson drained her first free throw.

CSB maintained a slim lead throughout the fourth quarter. A free throw from Thompson and a layup from McKenzie Holgate put the team up five, 75-70, with 21 seconds left in regulation. The Cobbers scored on a layup, but Thompson hit a free throw to make it a four-point game again, 76-72, with 19 seconds left.  Concordia scored again, and again CSB went 1-for-2 from the line to extend its lead – this time to three – but the Cobbers hit a three with two seconds left to tie the game at 77-77 and send it to overtime.

Saint Benedict's biggest largest lead of the game came in the first quarter when Shae Olsen hit a three to put the team up eight, 17-9. Maddie Schmitz scored late in the first to keep CSB's lead at eight, 19-11. The Cobbers went on a 12-4 run to start the second and tie the game at 23-23, and from there the game was close until Holgate scored with 24 seconds left in the half to give CSB a one-point lead, 31-30.

Schmtiz hit a three to start the third, and Breanna Gates added a three a short time later, followed by a layup from Schmitz, to make it a six-point game, 41-35. The Cobbers tied the game in the final minute and a half of the third, but Holgate hit a three and Sarah Ouimet ended the quarter with a three to give Saint Benedict a 53-49 lead heading into the final quarter.

Schmitz and Holgate both finished with a career-high 25 points to lead CSB, which shot nearly 51 percent from the field. Holgate went 9-for-11 from the field, including a perfect 6-for-6 from long range. Schmitz hit a trio of 3-pointers. Thompson added 14 points and Gates also finished with 10. Alex Johnson led the team with nine rebounds and Thompson added a career-high eight assists. Johnson also had five blocked shots.

CSB shot 70 percent from long range, finishing the night 12-for-17, and went 20-for-27 from the line. The team had 29 rebounds and 11 turnovers.

Concordia (7-15, 4-11) shot 49 percent from the field. Grace Wolhowe led the team with 27 points and nine rebounds and was one of four Cobbers who scored in double digits. Concordia hit eight 3-pointers, went 7-for-9 from the line and had 44 rebounds and 12 turnovers.

CSB is on the road again Saturday, Feb. 9, when it takes on St. Olaf at 5 p.m. in Northfield.
