ST. CLOUD, Minn. –
Sophie Stoffers' first collegiate goal ended up being the first game-winning goal of her career as well.
Stoffers scored the first goal of Sunday's game at the 5:30 mark of the third period, and that goal proved to be enough for the College of Saint Benedict hockey team in a 3-0 win over St. Kate's. The win gives CSB a split with the Wildcats this season, and bumps the team's overall record to .500 at 4-4. CSB is 2-4 in the MIAC.
Stoffers' goal – which was assisted by
Riley Schneider and
Hannah Lynse – would have been enough for the Bennies, but after two scoreless periods of play, the team had more to give.
Myka Stave made it 2-0 at the 11:39 mark of the third period with her second goal of the season off assists from
Julia Pias and
Annika Brodt, and
Mollie Wise added a goal for good measure in the final two minutes of the game to make it 3-0.
Rylan Bistodeau notched her first assist of the season on Wise's goal, and Stoffers also added the first assist of her CSB hockey career. Wise's goal came at the 18:22 mark, and she was able to shovel a pass into the net to seal the game for the Bennies.
After giving up a pair of power-play goals Saturday in a loss to the Wildcats, Saint Benedict only committed two penalties Sunday, and killed both successfully. The Wildcats (5-4, 2-4) put six shots on net on CSB's first penalty, which came in the second period, but first-year goalie
Ally Frantzick stopped all six.
CSB may have scored the most in the third period, but its biggest offensive period of the day came in the first when it put up 19 shots on net. The team had several tip-in opportunities or second-chance shots after St. Kate's goalie gave up a rebound, but Bryce Boreen stopped all 19 shots to keep the game scoreless. CSB's best chance of the period came in the final minute when a streaking
Courtney Conlin took a pass in front of the net, but she was unable to get the shot off as Boreen came sliding over.
In the second period, St. Kate's came out firing, and had 11 shots on net to CSB's six. Frantzick stopped all 11 shots to keep the game scoreless heading into the third period before Saint Benedict broke the scoreless tie. CSB outshot the Wildcats 9-3 in the final period.
Frantzick finished with 24 saves in the first win over her Saint Benedict hockey career. She had double-digit saves in both the first and second periods. CSB outshot St. Kate's 34-24. Conlin had a team-high seven shots on net, Wise finished with six and Stave and Brodt both had five.
Sunday's game marked the final competition of 2019 for CSB. The team is off now until Jan. 3-4 when it travels to Mequon, Wis., to take on Concordia-Wisconsin in a nonconference doubleheader.
