ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Both
Madison Weiss and
Hunter Weiss earned recognition earlier today for their success on the court this season, but the duo also were recognized Thursday for their work in the classroom.
Hunter and Madison were two of eight athletes honored with CoSIDA Academic All-District 6 honors, it was announced by CoSIDA Thursday afternoon. Saint Benedict was the only school in District 6 to have two selections to the all-district team, which also includes an athlete from both St. Olaf and St. Thomas.
This is the second straight all-district honor for Hunter and the first for Madison. The all-district honor means both athletes are eligible for Academic All-American honors, which will be announced in early December. The all-district honorees from all eight regions go into the pool for the prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-American honor.
This is the first time since 2009 that the CSB volleyball program has had two all-district honorees in the same season. Hunter is the third volleyball student-athlete to earn the honor more than once. This also marks the first year that CSB athletics has had two athletes honored in two different sports in the same season as soccer student-athletes Sydney Sherek and Megan Thompson each earned all-district honors last week.
Both Hunter and Madison are biology majors at Saint Benedict. Hunter, who has a cumulative GPA of 4.0 through her junior season, is a psychology major and Madison – who maintains a 3.81 GPA – is a nutrition minor.
The duo led not only CSB, but also the MIAC and the nation, at the net both offensively and defensively throughout 2019, and have been recognized accordingly for their athletic accomplishments. Hunter was both the MIAC and AVCA Central Region Player of the Year, and both earned All-MIAC First Team honors and All-Central Region First Team honors.
After beating UW-Eau Claire 3-1 in Thursday's first round, CSB advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. The team takes on the winner of the St. Olaf/ Northwestern match at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
