ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester didn't make it easy, but the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team picked up its first MIAC sweep of 2019 Wednesday night.
The Scots led much of the first set and kept things close until late, but CSB held on for the win en route to a 3-0 victory over the Scots in St. Paul. Seventh-ranked Saint Benedict is now 16-1 overall, 3-0 in the MIAC and riding a 13-match winning streak into Saturday's top-25 home match against No. 11 Augsburg.
CSB won 25-20, 25-15 and 25-15 Wednesday evening. The Scots took an 8-4 lead early in the first set, and while CSB tied the set 9-9 on a Macalester attack error, the Scots (3-13, 0-3) maintained a slim lead until the 16-15 mark.
Emily Marso and
Maurissa Isaacs teamed up for a block to tie the match at 16-16, and a kill from
Gabby Heying put CSB up for the first time. Macalester took one more lead at 20-19, but CSB rattled off six straight points to hold on for the win.
Sets two and three were all CSB. In set two, Saint Benedict jumped to an 8-3 lead, and later led 13-4 before the Scots started to come back. Macalester got within four, 14-10, but CSB went on another run to go up 21-11 and close out the win.
The Scots took an early lead again in Set 3, but after going down 6-3, CSB came back with a kill from
Katie Koch, two straight Macalester attack errors and a kill from Heying to go up 7-6 – a lead the team would never give back. CSB went on a run to go up 18-9 before pulling away for the win.
Madison Weiss had 17 kills to lead CSB, which had 43 total kills to the Scots' 29.
Hunter Weiss added nine kills and Heying finished with seven. Koch had 36 assists and nine digs, and
Mary Wenisch led the defense with 13 kills while
Bridget McDonald had 11.
Madison Weiss had five block assists and two solo blocks, and Isaacs finished with four solo blocks.
Eliza King and Zoe Lowe both had eight kills for the Scots, which hit .078 as a team to CSB's .326. Claire Loomans had 24 assists and Katrina Schoen had 12 digs.
CSB is back at home for the first time in a month Saturday, Oct. 5, when it hosts 11
th-ranked Augsburg at 3 p.m. in Claire Lynch. The Auggies lost a 3-2 thriller at St. Olaf Wednesday night in Northfield, marking their first MIAC loss of the season.
