ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team knew Saturday's match would be a big one, and the team came ready to play against the 11
th-ranked Auggies.
CSB – ranked No. 7 in Division III – out-hit Augsburg and out-performed the Auggies on defense in route to a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-20, 25-22) Saturday in Claire Lynch. The win marked the second straight MIAC sweep of the season for Saint Benedict, and pushed the team's record to 17-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play. CSB is on a 14-match winning streak, which is the team's longest since 2012.
In its first home match since Sept. 7, Saint Benedict came to play. Three kills from
Hunter Weiss plus one from
Madison Weiss and
Maurissa Isaacs helped CSB jump to a 9-3 lead in the first set.
Gabby Heying later had three straight kills to make it 12-7, and a block from Isaacs and
Emily Marso, and then kills from each of the two, made it 17-10. The Auggies got within four at 18-14, but were never able to make up the ground lost early in the set and CSB came away with the win.
Set 2 got off to a much closer start, with the Auggies (13-4, 3-2) taking a 9-7 lead, and the two teams trading points until CSB took a 13-12 lead on a kill from
Hunter Weiss. That sparked a 6-1 run that included two kills from Isaacs, and ended with the team up 18-13. The Auggies got within three this time at 19-16, but a service error and two kills from Heying helped put some distance between the two teams, and a kill from Marso ended the set.
After the Auggies took a 2-0 lead in Set 3, kills from
Madison Weiss and Isaacs and two service aces from Mary Wensich made it 5-2. Augsburg jumped back in, however, and took an 8-6 lead. The two teams went back and forth, but kills from Heying and
Madison Weiss made it 15-13, and CSB was able to maintain a slim lead until the Auggies took over at 21-20. But Heying had back-to-back kills, followed by a kill from
Madison Weiss, to make it 23-21, and
Katie Koch had a kill and the set ended with a big block from
Madison Weiss and Heying.
Saint Benedict finished the match hitting .330 as a team compared to the Auggies' .200 – including .517 in the first set. CSB had 50 kills to Augsburg's 34, and 50 digs to the Auggies' 35. Heying finished with a match-high 16 kills, which also tied her career high.
Hunter Weiss added 13 kills and hit .591 with no errors, and
Madison Weiss added eight kills and three solo blocks. Koch had 39 assists and a team-high 12 digs, and Halye LaValle had 11 digs.
Corrina Evans paced Augsburg with 10 kills, Lexie Lang had 16 assists and Jaelin Rios had 11 digs.
CSB is on the road for a pair of conference matches Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11-12 when it travels to Saint Mary's and St. Olaf. The team is back at home Wednesday, Oct. 16, against Hamline.
