Two second-period goals lift CSB over Wildcats

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team used a pair of second-period goals to pick up its second straight MIAC win Friday night. After giving up a single goal to St. Kate's in the first period, CSB shut the Wildcats out the next three to hold on for the 2-1 win in St. Paul.

The win marks CSB's seventh of the season, which marks the most wins for the team since 2015-16. Saint Benedict is 7-8-1 overall and 4-6-1 and in sixth in the MIAC. Four conference wins is also the most for the team since the 2015-16 season.

The Wildcats (4-12-2, 1-8-2) got on the board early in the game with a goal at the 4:17 mark of the first period. Saint Benedict had plenty of chances – the team put 14 shots on net in the first period – including four power plays, and a 3-on-5 situation, but couldn't find the back of the net. Courtney Conlin had three straight shots on net and Mollie Wise and Kylie Eklund each added a shot, but St. Kate's stopped all five. Maggie Gilchrist also made 15 first-period saves to help keep the game at 1-0 heading into the second.

CSB got itself on the board at the 2:33 mark of the second period when Conlin scored her seventh goal of the season. She took a pass from Kylie Eklund at the top of the left-hand faceoff circle in the Wildcats' zone, and put the puck over the goalie's right shoulder to tie the game at 1-1.

Six minutes later, it was Wise who scored the eventual game-winner when she got the puck on a breakaway, skated into St. Kate's zone and buried the puck in the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Zoe Culshaw-Klein had a shot that hit the pipe early in the third period as part of a string of shots on net for CSB. Julia Pias and Annika Brodt each added a shot, as did Conlin. Gilchrist came up big again in the third, stopping 11 shots – including four in the final two minutes of play when the Wildcats pulled their goalie to play with an extra skater.

Saint Benedict finished with 30 shots on net to the Wildcats' 31. Myka Stave and Conlin each finished with six shots on net to lead CSB and Wise added four. Gilchrist finished with a career-high 30 saves and picked up her third win of the season.

CSB and St. Kate's are back in action at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at the MAC in St. Cloud.
