Wildcats’ offense overpowers CSB in home loss

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Friday night in St. Paul, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team held on for a one-goal win over St. Kate's after holding on to the one-goal lead throughout a frantic third period.

CSB and St. Kate's combined for 17 penalties, eight goals and 67 shots on net as Saint Benedict fell 6-2 to the Wildcats at the MAC in St. Cloud. Five of the eight goals – including both of Saint Benedict's goals – came on the power play, and there were several 3-on-5 opportunities for each team. CSB is now 7-9-1 overall and 4-7-1 in the MIAC.

Saint Benedict killed off two 3-on-5 situation early in the first period, and midway through both teams were called for penalties and the Wildcats scored during the 4-on-4 to go up 1-0. Maggie Gilchrist made 14 first-period saves to keep her team in the game, but St. Kate's opened the floodgates in the second. The Wildcats added one more goal – another power-play goal – in the third at the 10:29 mark before CSB got on the board. With two Wildcats in the penalty box, Myka Stave notched her second goal of the season off an assist from Maria Wallace, and less than 45 seconds later Annika Brodt scored off assists from Maddie Dockry and Julia Pias to give CSB its second power-play goal of the game.
