Solid defense helps CSB come away with win over Concordia

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team scored a pair of second-period goals Saturday afternoon against Concordia, and then it held on for dear life.

CSB killed a 3-on-5 situation, Maggie Gilchrist made 10 third-period saves and Saint Benedict blocked seven third-period shots to hang for a 2-1 win over Concordia to wrap up the weekend with a series split in Alexandria.

The win pushes CSB's overall record to 6-8-1 and marks the team's third MIAC win of the year. Concordia is now 9-6-2 overall, and loss marked just the Cobbers' second conference loss of the season. Concordia – which is third in the MIAC – is now 6-2-2 in the league.

Much like Friday's game, the first period was scoreless for both teams, and CSB finished the period with an 8-6 advantage in shots on net.

After a trio of early saves from Gilchrist to start the second, CSB got on the board at the 4:20 mark when Shelby Schneider took a long pass from Zoe Culshaw-Klein and tipped the puck into the net to put CSB up 1-0. Riley Schneider was also credited with an assist. The team made it 2-0 four minutes later when it went on the power play and Julia Pias scored her seventh goal of the season on a shot from just to the right of the net that went over the goalie's shoulder. Annika Brodt got credit for the assist – her seventh of the season.

The Cobbers scored their fourth power play goal of the weekend at the 16:22 mark of the second to make it 2-1. Kaitlyn Page took a shot from the right side of CSB's net, and the puck slipped behind Gilchrist to make it a one-goal game. Culshaw-Klein had two of CSB's five shots on net to end the third period, but the score stayed at 2-1 heading into the final period.

The two teams traded shots on net to start the final period, and Concordia went on the power play at the 5:53 mark. The Cobbers had one shot on net before CSB was called for a second penalty, and the Cobbers had a two-woman advantage for nearly 50 seconds. Gilchrist made one save during the 3-on-5 and Culshaw-Klein and Courtney Conlin each had a blocked shot. Gilchrist added two more saves and Culshaw-Klein and Shelby Schneider each had another blocked shot before the power play ended.

The Cobbers kept attacking in the final 10 minutes of the game, but Gilchrist and CSB's defense held strong, and Saint Benedict was able to come away with the win.

CSB had 29 shots on net to Concordia's 23, and Gilchrist made 22 saves to pick up her second win of the season. Brodt had five shots on net and Kylie Eklund finished with four. Culshaw-Klein finished the night with four blocked shots and Bre Hess had three.

Saint Benedict returns to action with a pair of MIAC games next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25 and 26, against St. Kate's. The two teams are in St. Cloud at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26.
