Eklund scores twice as CSB falls to Bethel

BLAINE, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team outshot Bethel and took advantage of its one power-play opportunity Friday night, but it wasn't enough as the Royals beat CSB 5-3 in a MIAC game in Blaine, Minn.

CSB (5-6-1, 2-4-1) outshot Bethel 8-4 in the first period, but the score was tied 1-1 after the first 20 minutes of play. The Royals (4-8-1, 1-5-1) scored first at the 8:57 mark, and held a 1-0 lead throughout much of the first period, but CSB was able to tie the game in the final minute on a power-play goal. Kylie Eklund scored her first goal of the season at the 19:03 mark off an assist from Riley Schneider to make it a tie game heading into the second period.

The Royals took a 2-1 lead 34 seconds into the second period, but Schneider got into the scoring at the 13-minute mark to tie the game once again. Schneider's goal came off assists from Maddie Dockry and Courtney Conlin. The game stayed tied for six minutes before Bethel scored its third goal of the game with just under 30 seconds remaining in the second period.

Bethel extended its lead at the 6:53 mark of the third period before CSB scored again. Eklund scored her second goal of the game – and the season – off an assist from Conlin at the 10:05 mark in the third to make it a 4-3 game. The Royals, however, added one final goal to seal the win at the 16:43 mark – the third of the game by Kaylyn Forliti. Eklund, Annika Brodt, Myka Stave and Shelby Schneider all had shots on net in the final three minutes of play as CSB had an extra skater and an empty net, but couldn't score.

CSB finished the game with 29 shots on net to Bethel's 23. Riley Schneider and Brodt led the team with five shots each and Eklund had four. Kailee Medved finished with 18 saves, including 13 in the second period.

CSB and Bethel are back in action at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the MAC in St. Cloud.
