ST. CLOUD, Minn. – For the second day in a row, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team outshot Bethel, but couldn't find a way to score.
CSB led 1-0 For most of the first period and all of the second, but the Royals scored twice in a minute and a half in the third to pull away for a 2-1 win Saturday in St. Cloud.
Saint Benedict (5-7-1, 2-5-1) outshot the Royals 8-3 in the first period, and
Rylan Bistodeau got her team on the board with her second goal of the season at the 4:55 mark. Her goal came off an assist from
Bria Ferns – her first assist of the season.
That lead held through the remainder of the first period and all of the second period. First year goalie
Maggie Gilchrist made 13 second-period saves as Bethel (5-8-1, 2-5-1) outshot CSB 13-10.Saint Benedict had a flurry of shots on net early in the second, and three in a row late in the second period, but couldn't score, and maintained a 1-0 lead heading into the final period.
Kylie Eklund and
Maddie Dockry had back-to-back shots on net, and
Zoe Culshaw-Klein and
Reegan Patnode each added a shot, but it was the Royals who scored next, tying the score 1-1 at the 6:29 mark in the third. That swung the momentum towards Bethel, and the Royals notched the eventual game-winner at the 8:57 mark.
CSB pulled Gilchrist for the final two minutes of play, and Saint Benedict had several good looks at the net, but couldn't score the equalizer.
Saint Benedict finished with 30 shots on net to the Royals' 24.
Annika Brodt had five shots to lead CSB and
Mollie Wise finished with four. Gilchrist finished with 22 saves in her second-ever start, including 13 in the second period. CSB successfully killed all five penalties it was assessed throughout the game, including three in the second period.
CSB is back in action Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18-19, when it hosts Concordia at Runestone Arena in Alexandria, Minn. Friday's game is at 7:10 p.m. and Saturday's start time is 2 p.m.
