Penalties costly for CSB in loss to Cobbers

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team didn't spend all that much time in the penalty box Friday night, but when it did, Concordia made the team pay.

CSB was called for just three penalties Friday night, but the Cobbers scored on all three power-play attempts as they beat Saint Benedict 3-2 in a MIAC game at Runestone Arena in Alexandria, Minn.

The two teams were evenly matched in a scoreless first period as both CSB (5-8-1, 2-6-1) and Concordia (9-5-2, 6-1-2) finished with six shots on net. It was the Cobbers who got on the board first early in the second period shortly after CSB was called for its first penalty of the game. The Cobbers scored at the 2:41 mark to make it a 1-0 game, but Saint Benedict tied the game shortly after when Julia Pias took a pass from Annika Brodt and scored her sixth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

Saint Benedict was called for its second penalty of the game at the 11:12 mark of the second period, and the Cobbers scored their second goal of the game 22 seconds later to go up 2-1, and that's where the score stayed heading into the third period.

Concordia added one final goal – the eventual game-winner – at the 3:27 mark of the third period, with just nine seconds remaining in CSB's third and final penalty of the game. The goal put the Cobbers up 3-1, and they held that lead until the final four minutes of the game. Maddie Dockry scored her fourth goal of the season at the 16:53 mark in the third on a shot from in front of the net that went over the Cobber goalie's left shoulder to make it 3-2, and CSB pulled goalie Julia Carle two minutes later to put an extra skater on the ice. Maria Wallace assisted on Dockry's goal, marking her first assist of the season.

The Cobbers did their best to snag an empty net goal to make it a two-goal game, but Zoe Culshaw-Klein and Dockry each blocked at least one shot, and the final score stayed at 3-2.

Concordia outshot CSB 31-23. Pias and Mollie Wise both finished with four shots on net to pace Saint Benedict, which had two power play opportunities. Carle finished with 28 saves, including 14 in the third period, to help keep her team in the game.

CSB and Concordia are back in action at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Runestone Arena in Alexandria.
