ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team wrapped up another busy weekend with a pair of sweeps Saturday afternoon. The two wins pushed the team's record to 3-1 on the weekend and 6-3 overall to finish up its five-team home tournament.
CSB is now on a three-match winning streak – all sweeps – heading into its MIAC opener Wednesday.
Saint Benedict started Day 2 of tournament play with a nonconference sweep of Concordia. CSB won 25-20, 25-17 and 25-22. CSB was never able to pull away in the first set, and the Cobbers got within 20-19, but
Claire Westby had a kill and a service aces to make it 23-19 and
Hunter Weiss had a kill and a block with twin sister
Madison Weiss to end the set.
CSB jumped to an early lead in set two and maintained that lead throughout the set to hold on for the win, but in set three it was the Cobbers who grabbed an early lead. Concordia (2-6) led 6-3 before CSB went on a run to take a 7-6 lead. The Cobbers went on another run to make it 14-11, and held a slim lead until a kill from
Liz Schultz tied the match at 19-19. Concordia took a 22-20 lead, but kills from
Madison Weiss and Schultz and a
Bridget McDonald service ace ended the match.
Hunter Weiss finished with 11 kills and Westby added 10 to lead CSB.
Katie Koch had 32 assists and
Haley LaValle led the team with 15 digs. Schultz also added 13 digs.
St. Scholastica (2-4) kept things close in set one in the team's final match of the day, but CSB prevailed in a 25-21, 25-12, 25-13 win. The Saints hung around in set one, and took a 21-20 lead late, but Saint Benedict rattled off five straight points to win.
Madison Weiss had a pair of kills in that run.
The next two sets were all CSB, which hit .471 in the third and final set to hold on for the win.
The Weiss twins both had 15 kills to lead CSB, which had 45 total kills. Koch had 35 assists and
Allison Roehl finished with 17 digs. Schultz added 12 digs and LaValle finished with 11.
Lauren Mathews led the team with four block assists.
CSB is back at home Wednesday, Sept. 12, when it opens MIAC play against St. Kate's. The team then hits the road for a trio of games Sept. 14-15 in River Falls, Wis.
