CSB wraps up Wisconsin trip with a win

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team wrapped up its three-match Wisconsin road trip with a win Saturday afternoon. CSB beat host-school UW-River Falls 3-1 before heading home from River Falls, Wis.
 
The Falcons (7-5) won the first set 25-21, but Saint Benedict (9-4) cruised after that, winning 25-11, 25-12 and 25-19.
 
River Falls went on an early run in the first set, and led 18-13 before CSB made a run. Hunter Weiss, Lauren Mathews and Claire Westby had kills to make it 19-17, and a pair of Falcon attack errors made it 22-21, but River Falls scored the final three points to take a 1-0 set lead.
 
Saint Benedict cruised in set two, taking a 14-3 lead and then sailing to the win. Set three saw an 11-4 lead early for Saint Benedict, and an 8-1 run later put CSB up 24-11. A kill from Emily Marso gave CSB the set three win and a 2-1 set lead.
 
Brynne Wahl scored eight straight points for CSB to start set four, and the team led 11-1 before the Falcons got going. River Falls went on a 6-0 run to make it 15-11, but Westby had a pair of kills to keep CSB's momentum. The Falcons later cut the gap to 23-19, but Lauren Mathews had a kill and Allison Roehl a service ace to end the game and the match.
 
Hunter Weiss finished with 16 kills to lead CSB and Mathews and Madison Weiss each added seven. Wahl had 21 assists and Katie Koch added 14, and Haley LaValle led the defense with 22 digs. Koch and Liz Schultz each added 12 digs.
 
Karli Nielsen led UWRV with 10 kills, Hailey Huseth had 17 assists and Hannah Robb had a team-high 17 digs.
 
CSB is back at home and returns to MIAC play Wednesday, Sept. 19 when it hosts St. Thomas at 7 p.m.
