ST. PETER, Minn. – In its first outdoor game in the state of Minnesota in 2018, the College of Saint Benedict softball team picked up a MIAC sweep of Gustavus Wednesday afternoon in St. Peter.
Cassie Meyer gave up a single hit in five innings of work to help CSB win the first game 5-0, and the team racked up 11 hits in Game 2 for an 8-2 win. Saint Benedict – ranked 21
st in Division III - is now 15-5 overall and 2-2 in the MIAC.
In the first game of the day, the Gusties (4-12, 0-2) only got base runners in four of the seven innings, and advanced to third just once. Meyer gave up a single in the fifth inning and struck out five to improve her season record to 3-0, and
Alex Smith gave up a single run in the seventh in two innings of work. Megan TOninato had an RBI single for CSB in the third,
Madison Mikolich added an RBI single in the fourth and
Kate Deming hit a homer and
Claire Boatman and
Olivia Olson both sent in runs as part of a three-run seventh.
Deming, Toninato, Olson and Mikolich all had two hits for CSB, which finished with 11 hits. Deming had a triple to go with her solo homer, and Mikolich had a double.
In the second game, CSB started the scoring early thanks to an RBI sac fly from Boatman in the first and an RBI single from
Kendra Swanson and a Gustavus error in the third to go up 3-0. The Gusties scored one in the third, but CS Badded two more runs in the fourth off a hit from
Emilie Antony and an error, one run in the sixth and two unearned runs in the seventh.
Antony finished 4-for-5 to lead CSB – which had 11 more hits in Game 2.
Hailey Monroe also had a pair of hits.
Jocelyn Metz threw the first six innings to pick up the win, her fifth of the season. She gave up a single run on four hits with two strikeouts.
Kadee Vesledahl threw the final inning and gave up a single run on one hit.
CSB's home doubleheader against Hamline, scheduled for Thursday, April 12, has been postponed to a time and place yet to be determined. As of Wednesday, the team is scheduled to play Concordia at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the SJU Dome, and Saint Mary's at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Rochester Dome.
