Winter weather can’t keep CSB softball down

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – With blizzard-like conditions raging outside, the College of Saint Benedict softball team's bats were hot inside the SJU Dome Saturday night in Collegeville.

CSB beat Concordia 6-2 and 7-1, marking the team's second straight MIAC sweep and 17th overall win of the year. Saint Benedict is now 17-5 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC.

Emilie Antony got the scoring started early with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1. Kate Deming sent in a run with a bases-loaded walk, and Megan Toninato had an RBI single to make it 3-0 in the second before the Cobbers (4-16, 0-6) scored in the fourth. Toninato had a sac fly and Sara Wennerstrand had an RBI double in the fourth, and Kendra Swanson wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth.

Antony finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, Swanson finished 2-for-2 and Toninato recorded a pair of RBIs for CSB, which finished with seven hits. Kiela DeVlaemicnk threw the first 4.2 innings to earn the win on the mound, and Jocelyn Metz got her first save of the season in the final 2.1 innings. DeVlaeminck gave up two runs on two hits with two strikeouts, and Metz gave up a single hit.

The Cobbers scored first in Game 2 of the doubleheader, but that was the only run they would score the rest of the game. CSB scored three runs of its own in the bottom of the first on an error, a passed ball and an RBI groundout, then added a trio of runs in the third on a two-run homer from Swanson and an RBI single from Karlee Pfaff. Swanson added an RBI single to her nightly total in the sixth to wrap up scoring.

Swanson finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead CSB, which had eight hits. Antony tripled and Toninato and Swanson each had a double. Cassie Meyer earned her fourth win of the year after giving up a single run on four hits with three strikeouts in three innings of work. Alex Smith gave up a single hit in three innings, and Ally Hjort threw the final inning.

Saint Benedict was scheduled to take on Saint Mary's Sunday, April 15, at the Rochester Dome, but those games are postponed due to the forecasted snow and poor road conditions. A makeup date has not yet been determined.
