TUCSON, Ariz. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team wrapped up its week in Tucson with a pair of five-inning wins Friday afternoon. CSB beat Hiram (Ohio) 9-1, then turned around and shut out Northland (Wis.) 15-0 to end its time in Arizona with an 8-2 record.
CSB – which is now 13-3 overall – gave up a single run against Hiram to start the game, but added three runs of its own in the bottom of the first inning to take a lead it would never give up.
Emilie Antony had an RBI single and
Claire Boatman had an RBI double. Saint Benedict scored four runs in the third thanks to RBI singles from
Megan Toninato and
Madison Mikolich, as well as a Hiram error. CSB ended the game early thanks to a two-run single from
Kate Deming in the bottom of the fifth.
Deming, Toninato,
Sara Wennerstrand and
Maya Chuppe all had two hits for CSB, which finished with 12 total hits. Deming led the team with two RBIs.
Jocelyn Metz improved to 4-0 on the season after giving up a single run on five hits in five innings of work. She struck out two batters.
In its final game of the trip, senior pitcher
Cassie Meyer gave up just three hits and shut out Northland's offense. Northland had just six runners reach base in five innings.
After scoring a single run in the first and three in the second, Saint Benedict exploded for six runs in the third and five more in the fourth. Haley Monroe hit a two-run double and
Ashlan Svihel hit a two-run homer – the first of her collegiate career – to pace CSB.
Ten different players got hits for CSB, and five players had multiple hits. Antony,
Olivia Olson, Chuppe,
Amanda Haley and Monroe all had two hits, and Svihel and Monroe each had two RBIs. Meyer struck out four batters.
CSB is off now until Wednesday, April 4, when it heads to St. Paul to take on St. Kate's in its first MIAC game of the season. The team's first home game – and first game on the new turf field – is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 7 against St. Thomas.
