Three homers not enough as CSB falls to Tommies

PLYMOUTH, Minn. – After nearly a month without playing a game, the College of Saint Benedict softball team was able to get back on the field Saturday afternoon, but the team's MIAC opener didn't end how it had hoped.

Three different athletes hit home runs for CSB – ranked 19th in Division III – but it wasn't enough as it dropped a MIAC doubleheader to No. 14 St. Thomas at the Providence Academy Dome in Plymouth. The Tommies won the first game 6-3 in eight innings, and held on for the 6-5 win in the second game.

CSB (13-5, 0-2) got on the board first in Game 1 of the doubleheader, which was scheduled to be the team's home opener. Claire Boatman singled and came around to score on an RBI single by Madison Mikolich in the bottom of the second, but the Tommies scored a pair of unearned runs in the third and one more in the fourth to go up 3-1. Sara Wennerstrand walked, advanced on an error and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2 in the fourth, and she tied the game in the fifth with a solo home run.

The game stayed tied through regulation, and in the top of the eighth the Tommies (13-5, 3-1) took advantage of a throwing error, a walk, a hit by pitch and a two-run single to score three runs to take a 6-3 lead. Claire Boatman doubled to start the bottom of the inning, but was stranded on third to end the game.

Wennerstrand and Boatman both had two hits for CSB, which finished the game with six total hits. Ally Hjort threw all eight innings and took the loss – just her second of the season. She gave up six runs – none earned – on seven hits and struck out seven batters.

Saint Benedict jumped ahead early in the second game as Kate Deming singled, Megan Toninato reached on a fielder's choice and Emilie Antony drove both home with a three-run homer to make it 3-0 early. The Tommies scored twice in the second on an error and an RBI fielder's choice to make it 3-2, then added three more runs in the third thanks to five straight hits (three doubles and two singles) to go up 5-3.

UST added a single run in the fourth on an RBI single to make it 6-3, and CSB made it a one-run game in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two-run homer from Boatman, but that's as close as it could get.

Antony went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Boatman had two RBIs for CSB, which had seven hits to St. Thomas' 11.  Kiela DeVlaeminck threw the first three innings and took the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Alex Smith struck out two and gave up a single run in two innings of work, and Cassie Meyer threw the final inning.

CSB is scheduled to be on the road Wednesday, April 11, to take on Gustavus on the Gusties' turf football field in St. Peter. That game was scheduled to be Sunday, April 8, but was pushed back due to field conditions. CSB is scheduled to play at home Thursday, April 12, but a decision will be made closer to game day based on field conditions and air temperature.
