DULUTH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team split a pair of nonconference matches Saturday afternoon. CSB fell 6-3 to Division II Minnesota-Duluth to start the day, but rebounded with a 9-0 sweep of UW-Superior at Arrowhead Tennis Center in Duluth, Minn.
CSB is now 10-4 overall, which matches the team's win total from last season. Ten wins each of the past two seasons is the most for the team since 2013-14.
"(Saturday) was a good example of how we can compete against great teams, but we need to play complete matches from start to finish," head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "We know we have the talent, we just need to be more consistent in our focus and execution."
Against Superior, Saint Benedict used solid doubles play to start the match.
Tessa Rahrick and
Kayla McIver won 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, and
Ellen Stensrud and
Mackenzie Schurhamer followed suit with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles.
Erin Kolbow and
Lauren Clark won 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.
Rahrick won 8-1 at No. 2 singles, and Kolbow picked up an 8-3 win at No. 2 singles. Stensrud won 8-2 at No. 2, and McIver beat her opponent 8-0 at No. 4 singles. Schurhamer won 8-1 at No. 5, and
Gabbie Noack wrapped up the day with an 8-2 win at No. 6 singles.
UMD picked up two singles wins to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play in CSB's first match of the day. Kolbow and Clark won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles to get Saint Benedict on the board. The Bulldogs won at No. 1 and 2 singles, and both Stensrud and McIver took their matches to extra sets at No. 3 and 4 singles. After losing the first set 6-1, Stensrud won the next 7-5 before falling 10-5 in the extra set. McIver lost 6-3 at No. 4 singles before winning the next set 7-5, but fell 10-4 in extras.
Schurhamer won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and
Kylie Miller won 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 6 singles.
CSB is off now until March 30 when it is schedule to host Gustavus at noon in its third MIAC match of the season.
