MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team picked up its first MIAC loss of the season at the hands of St. Thomas Sunday evening. The Tommies beat CSB in the MIAC matchup, played at the Baseline Tennis Center on the U of M campus in Minneapolis.
"I thought (Sunday) was one of the best matches we've played all year," head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "We competed the right way, and the score line does not show how close each match was. It was a huge step forward for the program, and something we can really springboard off of moving forward."
Each doubles team won at least three games Sunday to keep things close with the Tommies (6-0, 4-0).
Tessa Rahrick and
Kayla McIver fell 8-3 at No. 1 doubles,
Ellen Stensrud and
Mackenzie Schurhamer fought hard but came up short in an 8-5 loss at No. 2 doubles, and
Erin Kolbow and
Lauren Clark lost 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Schurhamer had a big match at No. 5 singles for Saint Benedict, and pushed her second set to the limit before falling 6-1, 7-5. Rahrick fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and Kolbow lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Stensrud won several games before falling 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, and McIver fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Clark fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Saint Benedict is now 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC. CSB hosts Crown College at 5 p.m. Friday, March 2, at Sta-Fit in Sartell before heading to California to play there matches over spring break.
