Thompson, Fingalsen hit double-digits in CSB’s loss at Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Megan Thompson and Haylee Fingalsen both hit double-digits in scoring Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough for the College of Saint Benedict basketball team as it fell 77-52 to UW-Superior in a nonconference matchup in Superior, Wis.

The loss marks the second in as many days for Saint Benedict, which opens MIAC play at home Saturday against Gustavus. CSB is 2-3 overall heading into the conference season.

The Yellowjackets (4-1) got off to a fast start, and led 13-3 midway through the first quarter. Sidney Schiffler hit a three for CSB at the 7:22 mark, but that, a pair of jumpers from Maddie Schmitz and a single free throw from Shae Olsen were the only points of the quarter for CSB as Superior led 26-8 after one quarter.

Thompson hit a pair of threes in the second and first year Bailey Becker scored on a jumper and a 3-pointer late in the quarter, but Superior led 42-23 at the half. The Yellowjackets pushed their lead to 30 in the third, and led 60-33 heading into the final quarter.

CSB went on a 7-0 run to start the fourth highlighted by a three from McKenzie Holgate, and Fingalsen hit back-to-back threes, but Superior was able to hold off any thoughts of a CSB rally and come away with the win.

Thompson had 12 points and Fingalsen finished with 10 for CSB, which shot 32.7 percent from the field and hit seven 3-pointers. Breanna Gates and Thompson both had four rebounds. CSB went 9-for-13 from the line and had 31 rebounds and 17 turnovers.

Hannah Norlin was one of three players in double-digits for Superior with 19 points and she also had 12 rebounds. The Yellowjackets shot 50.8 percent from the field – including 5-for-12 from long range – and went 6-for-11 from the line. Superior had 44 rebounds and 12 turnovers.

CSB hosts the Gusties at 1 p.m. Saturday as both teams open conference play. Saint Benedict has three home MIAC games in December before the holiday break.
