ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team traveled to Winona this week to play MIAC opponent St. Mary's University. Saturday, the team went to St. Mary's and beat the Cardinals by a score of 3-1. This was head coach
Steve Kimble's 100
th win.
Saint Benedict is now 4-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAC, while St. Mary's is 5-7 overall and 0-6 in the league.
CSB got on the board first Saturday afternoon when
Megan Thompson scored the first goal of the game and her third goal of the season in the thirty seventh minute of the game. Before the half,
Brianna Griffin scored in the forty seventh minute of the half.
Nicole Newman assisted on both goals of the first half.
That 2-0 lead held until the 38th minute of the first half when the Royals tied the game on a high kick over
Kendall Koenen.
Sydney Sherek had a nice shot on net with just three minutes left in the half, but the shot was saved and the two teams went into overtime tied 1-1.
CSB took a 2-0 lead into the second half and
Megan Thompson scored her second goal of the game in the sixtyish minute off an assist of Margo Achterkich. The Bennies took this lead into the seventy fourth minute until Maura Michener scored an unassisted goal for St. Mary's.
Kendall Koenen and
Kayli Thulin combined for three saves for CSB and Gabriella Pederson had two saves for St. Mary's.
CSB had a big day offensively, finishing with 11 shots including five on net. The Cardinals had seven total shots, but only four on net.
CSB is off now until Tuesday, Oct. 9, when it hosts St. Catherine University.
