CSB sweeps Coe, wins fifth straight

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team picked up its fifth straight win, its fifth straight sweep and stayed perfect at 5-0 in true road games this season Friday night thanks to a 3-0 win at Coe College.
 
The sweep kicked off a three-game weekend for CSB, which is now 18-5 overall and one win away from matching its 2017 win total of 19 as the team finished 19-9 overall. The team's latest victory came by scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
 
Coe (15-7) led 14-11 midway through the first set, but CSB rattled of five straight points on three straight Kowhawk attack errors to go up 16-14. After more back and forth, Saint Benedict finished the set on a four-point run thanks to kills from Liz Schultz and Hunter Weiss and a solo block from Madison Weiss.
 
CSB maintained a slim lead throughout the second set, and was able to hold off several surges from the Kohawks. Coe got within 21-19, but Hunter, Haley LaValle and Katie Koch had kills, and Schultz ended the set with a kill.
 
The third and final set was tied 10-10, but Madison had a hand in three straight blocks to give CSB a 13-10 lead, and the team ended the match on a 10-2 run that ended with kills from Claire Westby and Lauren Mathews.
 
Schultz had 12 kills to lead CSB, Hunter Weiss finished with 11 and Mathews added 10. Koch had 33 assists, LaValle and Bridget McDonald each had 17 digs and Schultz also added 13 digs. Madison had seven total blocks, including two solo blocks, and Hunter added four total blocks.
 
CSB is back in action Saturday for a pair of neutral-site games. The team takes on Cornell at noon and UW-La Crosse – which beat CSB in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament – at 2 p.m.
