ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Friday,
Haley LaValle had a career night to help the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team to a big MIAC sweep. Wednesday evening, it was
Madison Weiss' turn.
Weiss had a career-high 17 kills to lead Saint Benedict to a sweep of Augsburg to push the team's MIAC record to 7-0. This is the best conference start since 2008 for CSB, which is 17-5 overall and tied for first in the league with Gustavus.
CSB – which is on a four-match winning streak – held off late Augsburg rallies in all three sets to win 25-21, 25-21 and 25-23. A 10-1 run in the first set that included three kills from
Hunter Weiss and two kills and three blocks from
Madison Weiss put CSB up 20-10, and kills from
Lauren Mathews and Madison made it 24-17 before the Auggies (17-5, 4-3) went on a four-point run before a kill from Madison ended the set.
The second set was much closer throughout, but a kill from Mathews and three straight Augsburg attack errors gave CSB some breathing room at 14-10 and the team never trailed again. A kill from
Madison Weiss made it 24-20, and a big kill from
Hunter Weiss ended the set to put CSB up 2-0.
The lead changed hands several times in the third and final set, and two kills from Madison and a pair of blocks from the Weiss twins put CSB up 22-18. The Auggies hung strong, and got within 24-23, but
Hunter Weiss had another big kill to end the set and the match.
Hunter had 13 kills to go along with Madison's 17, and the duo combined for 10 of the team's 14 total blocks.
Katie Koch had 38 assists and 13 digs, and
Haley LaValle led the team with 20 digs.
Bridget McDonald also added 10 digs.
Megan Quam paced Augsburg with 11 kills and Morgan Malley had 28 assists and 12 digs. Macey Terhell led the team defensively with 17 digs.
CSB is on the road for a trio of games this weekend in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Saint Benedict takes on Coe Friday night and Cornell and UW-La Crosse Saturday at the Coe Tournament. CSB isn't home again until Wednesday, Oct. 24, when it hosts Macalester.
