St. Paul, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict women's hockey team played a tight game, but drew a 1-0 loss against Marian University on Saturday at TRIA rink in St. Paul. Despite the loss, first year goaltender
Kailee Medved backstopped CSB (1-10-1, 0-5-1 MIAC) spectacularly, stopping 26 out of 27 shots that she faced.
Marian (4-10-0, 3-5-0 NCHA) opened up the scoring with what would prove to be the game-winner at the 17:31 mark of the first period when Jamie Henrickson snuck the puck past first year goaltender
Kailee Medved from down low to put her team up 1-0. Saint Benedict would respond with offensive zone pressure, but nothing got past Marian goaltender Lindsay Lewison and the score remained 1-0 heading into the second period.
Medved would prove to be the star of the second period, as she turned away all 11 shots that Marian threw on net. The Sabres would outshoot CSB 11-6 in the period, but Saint Benedict would end the period with momentum as Marian was called for a penalty at the 18:57 mark, allowing CSB to start the third period on the man advantage.
CSB would start the third utilizing their advantage and peppering the net with shots, but Lewison would again find herself successful in defending her cage, turning all the shots away. Saint Benedict would continue to put pucks on net, with Brigitte Miller and
Riley Schneider each throwing three shots on goal. However, Marian's defense and goaltending would keep the game in their favor and the score held at 1-0 as the final horn blew.
Marian outshot CSB 27-20 in the game, with Lewison stopping all 20 shots that she faced. Both team's penalty kills were perfect on the day, with CSB killing off both of their penalties and Marian killing off their lone penalty.
Saint Benedict will return to action on Jan. 11 when they return to MIAC action and host Bethel at Dave Torrey Arena in St. Cloud for a 7:30 p.m. match up.
