ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – A strong showing by the first line and a solid night between the pipes helped the College of Saint Benedict hockey team pick up its first home win and first MIAC win of the season Thursday night.
First-line teammates
Brigette Miller and
Alexis Klatt took care of the scoring for CSB and first year goalie
Kailee Medved stopped 45 shots to help Saint Benedict to a 3-2 win over Bethel at the MAC in St. Cloud. That marked the second win of the year for CSB, which is 2-10-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the MIAC.
Medved had a perfect first period for CSB as she stopped all 15 shots the Royals sent her way. Her teammates helped her cause as Miller scored the first goal of the game in the 10
th minute off a pass from
Mollie Wise to put CSB up 1-0. Saint Benedict held that lead and was able to increase it to 2-0 in the final 30 seconds of the game when
Alexis Klatt scored her first goal of the season to make it 2-0 heading into the first intermission.
Medved added 16 saves to her total in the second period, but Bethel (5-8-1, 1-5-1) got on the board with a power play goal in the 15
th minute. The penalty marked just the second of the game for CSB, which finished the night with just those two shorthanded series.
Miller gave the team some breathing room five minutes into the final period when she scored her fifth goal of the season on a pass in front of the net that she was able to sneak in past the Royals' goalie. Wise picked up her second assist of the night on the goal and
Maddie Dockry also had a hand in the goal.
The Royals pulled their goal with 2:37 left to play and scored almost immediately in the 17
th minute of the game, but Medved made three saves in the final 1:30 of play to help Saint Benedict pick up its first conference win of the year.
Bethel outshot Saint Benedict 47-19, but Medved's stellar play kept CSB in the game. She had double-digit saves in all three periods. Miller and
Rylan Bistodeau led CSB with three shots on net each, and Wise and
Riley Schneider each added two.
CSB takes on the Royals again at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, in Arden Hills. After that, Saint Benedict is on the road twice more as it makes the trip up to Moorhead for a pair of games against Concordia Jan. 19-20 before returning home on Friday, Jan. 26.
