BLAINE, Minn. – Two days after picking up its first conference win of the year, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team's offense fell flat in a 6-3 loss to Bethel Saturday afternoon in Blaine.
It was a one-goal game after one period, and CSB tied the game in the second, but the Royals scored five straight goals to end the second and start the third and held CSB to just 16 shots on net all game.
The Royals (6-8-1, 2-5-1) scored late in the first period to go up 1-0 when Kaitlyn VanTassel found the back of the net on a 4-on-4 opportunity in the 17
th minute. Bethel held that lead until the eight minute of the second when
Kaitlyn Miller scored her second goal of the season to tie the game 1-1 for Saint Benedict.
After that it was all the Royals, however, as Bethel scored three more second-period goals – all within a matter of three minutes – and added two goals early in the third to go up 6-1. One goal came on the power play and another was a shorthanded goal to end the second period.
CSB added a pair of goals in the final six minutes of play, but it was too little, too late.
Rylan Bistodeau scored the first goal of her CSB career in the 14
th minute of the final period off assists from
Riley Schneider and
Reegan Patnode, and
Courtney Conlin added a goal in the 18
th minute off an assist from
Brigette Miller.
Bethel finished with 39 shots on net to CSB's 16.
Kailee Medved made 23 saves but gave up six goals before junior goalie Julia Carle took over in net in the third period. Carle finished with 10 saves in just over 14 minutes of play.
CSB is on the road for a pair of games Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19-20, when it heads to Moorhead to take on Concordia.
