St. Paul, Minn.- The College of Saint Benedict women's hockey team suffered their first loss of their new year, dropping a thrilling 5-4 overtime decision to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday in St. Paul.
CSB (1-9-1, 0-5-1 MIAC) started the game on a high note when
Kimberly Patterson netted her first goal of the season just 2:39 into the contest. The Pointers (6-4-1, 1-1-0 WIAC) would not get themselves on the scoreboard until 1:54 of the second period, when Cara Lemirande scored an unassisted goal.
Saint Benedict would be the next to convert offensively, as
Courtney Conlin would net her first goal of the season to put CSB back up by a goal, 2-1. Just 1:40 later
Kennedy Hageness would convert to put CSB up by a pair to round out the action of the second period.
UWSP came out shooting in the third period, netting their first goal less than two minutes into the frame. Alex Grubbs would tie the game with 10:46 remaining in regulation, and the Pointers would take their first lead of the game when Lexi Englund converted in the 16th minute of the period.
Conlin's streak of timely goals would continue as she would score her second unassisted goal of the night to tie the game at 4-4 and force overtime. The extra frame was a short one as Maddie Monroe would convert just over a minute in to seal the win for UW-Stevens Point.
UWSP outshot CSB by a thin 32-29 margin, and the Pointers took the only penalty of the night late in the third period.
Julia Carle stopped 27 shots she faced, while Sydney Conley stopped 25 for UWSP.
Saint Benedict returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Marian University at 12 p.m in St. Paul.
